DO YOU REALLY SELL THE BEST PIZZAS IN LONDON?
Well modesty prevents us from boasting too much and perhaps "in London" could be stretching credibility a little, but yes, Costin our chef makes damn fine pizzas at an excellent price and we reckon they're better by far than anything in the area. Say "Hi" to him through the hatch to our open kitchen just as he's hand making 8 different pizzas simultaneously and he'll give you a friendly wave. Or something.
BUT I REALLY WANT A BURGER...
Well you're in luck. If there is one thing Costin is as proud of as his hand made pizzas, it's his spectacularly good burgers. Try his Cheese Bomb Burger and wonder where it's been all your life, or the Monster Burger and wonder when your full if you can ask for a box to take the rest home (you can!)
HOW OLD IS YOUR PUB?
Old. The first landlord recorded at Sir Sydney Smith was Mr Henry Mogge, a victualler, in 1816 although we've found mention of the pub in a newspaper dated 1809. So we've been selling beers from this pub for over 200 years. You'd have thought we'd have got the hang of it by now.
ARE YOU WHEELCHAIR FRIENDLY?
We're very friendly towards wheelchairs. And also quite friendly to the person using it too. We have a little step at the front door which is easy to surmount and although we are a small pub, don't worry we'll find space for you inside. We also have a separate toilet large enough to accommodate wheelchairs so there are no excuses, come on in!
ARE YOU NEAR WILTON'S MUSIC HALL?
Yes we are. Wilton's is just a short walk away around a couple of corners. We get quite a few people coming in for drinks prior to a show at Wilton's and we often get asked for directions too as it's hard to find!
PS they sell pizzas too but we think ours are better!
ARE YOU NEAR THE TOWER OF LONDON?
Don't you people have a map? Just kidding. Yes we're about a ten minute brisk walk from the Tower although you'd better follow your Maps App as there are a couple of tricky junctions to negotiate on the way. But it's worth the walk. We're also just around the corner from the Jack the Ripper Museum.
DO YOU ALLOW DOGS?
We love dogs. Big dogs, small dogs, furry dogs and fluffy dogs. We're not too keen on loud dogs but quiet, well behaved ones will get a bowl of water and a pat on on the head. The owners too if that's what you really want but we'd prefer you to buy a pint.
DO YOU ALLOW SHETLAND PONIES?
No. We're not making that mistake again.
ARE YOU NEAR AN UNDERGROUND STATION?
Well to be honest, most of central London is near an Underground station. It's a pretty extensive system. Our nearest tube stations are Tower Hill and Aldgate East. On the DLR, Tower Gateway station is just a hop, skip and a jump away.
DO YOU HAVE A FUNCTION ROOM?
Sadly, no. We're only a little pub although it is split into two sections and we regularly have bookings for up to 30 people in the back area where the whole section can be reserved.
DO YOU HAVE OUTSIDE SEATING?
Sort of! What we actually have is a couple of small tables on the narrow pavement outside which aren't bad if it's not raining. There's always a warm welcome inside though....
DO YOU HAVE A DARTBOARD?
Yes we do! We have darts to throw at it too. We also have lots of darts teams playing lots of matches so if you want to "throw an arrow" or two, your best opportunity to get access to the board will be during the day. If you've never played before, give us a warning so we can move other customers further away.
DO YOU HAVE A POOL TABLE?
No. Stick to darts.
DO YOU SHOW FOOTBALL ON THE TELLY?
We don't. We're more into conversation and background music. If you're into your sports, visit our other pub the Brown Bear just down the road where they also sell mighty fine Thai food.
